Are you really tell me Apple is gonna release *big inhale* iPhone5, retina 13” MBP, new iPad mini, redesigned iPad (full-size), redesigned iPod, new iMacs all in September? You’re really just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sicks. Just stay with iPhone 5, you’ll have the greatest chance of being right.

Cocooned Trees, Pakistan

Spider web cocooons pakistan 44718 990x742

An unexpected side effect of the 2010 flooding in parts of Sindh, Pakistan, was that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters; because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water took so long to recede, many trees became cocooned in spiderwebs. People in the area had never seen this phenomenon before, but they also reported that there were fewer mosquitoes than they would have expected, given the amount of standing water that was left. Not being bitten by mosquitoes was one small blessing for people that had lost everything in the floods.

Market Share and OS Versions

After reading an article about how the Nexus One isn’t getting upgraded to the newest version of Android, I got to thinking. Most people would agree that marketshare is a important indicator of a platform’s success and developer interest in that platform, but from a developer point of view, I want to know the market share of devices that can run the newest version of the OS. If a manufacturer is saying that their device is too old to be able to be upgraded to the newest version of an OS, should it really be considered a X device anymore? All of these Android phones that are stuck at 2.3 or 2.2 or 1.6 or whatever, should those really count as market share? At what point do those go away? Likewise with Apple devices, if it can’t run the latest and greatest iOS version, I don’t think it should count in market share. Okay, maybe still lump everything into ‘Unit Market Share’ but we should have a new measurement, maybe called ‘Active Unit Market Share’. Active Unit Market Share only includes devices that are capable AND can update (read: the update is released) to the most recent version of the OS.

Interesting Mac App Store Message

I was installing Growl from the Mac AppStore and got this message.

I didn’t know they could detect applications installed outside of the AppStore. Can they do non-AppStore to App-Store upgrades (paid or not)? Anyone else get this message before?

Translation: We’re being threatened but we’re old and don’t know how to compete so we’re gonna try as hard as we can to spread FUD, grasp at any possible straw we can, and hope we scare some people away from them and back to us.
